TIRUVARUR: A day after the election manifesto released by DMK promised to waive off agriculture loans taken by small and medium farmers, party president M K Stalin, who was campaigning in Tiruvarur district, revised the promise stating that farm loans taken by all irrespective of the acreage will be waived off.
Stalin visited Manakkal village near Koradacherry where he met a group of women villagers.
He spoke about the welfare schemes introduced by the previous DMK governments towards women development including reservation in local body election and launching self-help group (SHG) for the first time in the state.
After Manakkal, Stalin visited Thirukkaravasal near Tiruvarur, where villagers had staged a protest against the hydrocarbon exploration for more than 40 days.
“We assure you to declare the Cauvery delta as a protected zone for agriculture activities,” Stalin told the villagers.
The protest committee against hydrocarbon in Thirukkaravasal welcomed the move. “Both loan waiver for all farmers and assurance to protect the Cauvery delta hamlets were received well among our villagers,” M Subbaiyan, secretary of the protest committee said.
